Wat Khot Thimtharam

Unlike the tourist-heavy temples of Bangkok or Chiang Mai, Wat Khot Thimtharam is a working neighborhood temple that happens to be the oldest one in Rayong province — Thai tradition traces its founding to the Ayutthaya era, credited to a local ruler remembered simply as Tim. The name reflects both: “khot” means sandbank, describing the raised ground beside the Rayong River where the temple was built, and “Thimtharam” honors its founder. It sits in Tha Pradu subdistrict, the same stretch of riverbank as Yomjinda Road old town, so it’s an easy add-on if you’re already walking that part of the city.

The centerpiece inside the ordination hall is Luang Pho Khao, a Buddha image estimated at more than 500 years old — older than the surrounding buildings, which have been rebuilt and restored over the centuries the temple has stood here. The hall’s walls carry murals depicting the Ten Birth Tales, the Dasajati Jataka stories of the Buddha’s previous lives, painted by local artisans rather than an imported studio style. Outside the main hall, the grounds are modest — a scattering of smaller shrines and pavilions rather than a sprawling complex — and monks go about ordinary daily routines rather than performing for visitors.

Insider Tip: Come for Luang Pho Khao specifically rather than expecting a grand architectural complex — this is a small, genuinely old temple, not a showcase one, and its value is in what it houses rather than its scale.

Dress modestly, shoulders and knees covered, and remove your shoes before entering the ordination hall — sarongs are sometimes available at the entrance if you need one. Songthaews run from central Rayong, but a taxi or your own transport is the more direct option. Pair it with Wat Pa Pradu, a short distance away in the same subdistrict, if you want more than one stop in Rayong’s old riverside quarter.
