Phra Chedi Klang Nam

Phra Chedi Klang Nam stands on a small mangrove-fringed island in the Rayong River, about 2 kilometres south of Rayong town near the river mouth. The bell-shaped brick-and-mortar chedi rises roughly 10 metres, with a double-tiered wall around its base and staircases on two sides. Entry is free.

Governor Phraya Sri Samut Phokchaichitsongkhram (Ket Yomjinda) had it built in 1873, positioned deliberately where incoming boats would see it — a navigational marker signalling that a vessel had reached Rayong, in an era when the river was the main route into town. The site still functions as a landmark for river traffic today.

Insider Tip: Once a year, on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, the community holds a ceremony to change the cloth wrapped around the chedi, timed alongside boat races and Loi Krathong celebrations on the river. It’s a good window to see the site in active use rather than as a quiet river-mouth monument.

Watch out: Because the chedi sits on its own island, getting to it means a short boat crossing, not a walk — access depends on local boat operators and can be affected by river conditions, so it’s worth checking ahead rather than assuming a fixed schedule.

Rayong grew up as a river-mouth port, and the chedi is one of the clearest physical reminders of that history — a monument built specifically to be seen from the water, at a time when the sea and the Rayong River were the town’s main connection to the outside world rather than the roads that serve it today.

The chedi is a short trip from Rayong’s other historic river-mouth sites — Rayong Old Town along Yomjinda Road (named for the same Yomjinda family that governed Rayong when the chedi was built) and Wat Pa Pradu both make sense to combine with a visit here.
