Chiang Mai Best City Tour with Doi Suthep, Pha Lat & Chedi Luang
Availability checked
Wat Pha Lat is what makes this tour different from the standard Chiang Mai temple run. Hidden halfway up the Doi Suthep road inside forest, it sees a fraction of the crowds at the main summit temple, and this half-day tour folds it into a sensible route that also covers Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Wat Chedi Luang and Tha Phae Gate.
Pickup is from selected city hotels in an air-conditioned vehicle, with admission fees included. The guide takes you first up Doi Suthep to Wat Phra That, where the gilded chedi and long-view over Chiang Mai get most of the photos. Wat Pha Lat follows, a moss-covered complex of naga sculptures and forest stupas that feels centuries older than the road that passes it. Back in the old city, Wat Chedi Luang reveals the broken 15th-century pagoda that once housed the Emerald Buddha, and Tha Phae Gate gives you the old-city moat frame for a final photo stop. The whole circuit runs 4 to 6 hours depending on how long you linger.
Works well for first-timers who want the headline sights plus one lesser-known stop in a single morning or afternoon. Modest clothing is required for all temple visits (shoulders and knees covered). The Doi Suthep climb involves stairs, though there’s a lift available. Bring water; no lunch is included, so plan a meal back in town. Pace is moderate rather than rushed, with enough time at Wat Pha Lat to actually sit in its forested courtyard. Meeting point is Sun Leisure World’s office at the Duang Tawan Hotel lobby if you’re not in a covered pickup hotel. Gratuities for driver and guide aren’t included but are appreciated.

Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara Wat Chedi Luang, this temple is the site of an enormous pagoda, originally 280 feet high, and which was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1545. At one time, Wat Chedi Luang housed the revered Emerlad Buddha image now enshrined in Bangkok’s Wat Phra Kaew. One of Wat Chedi Luang’s most striking architectural features is a magnificent Naga staircase adorns the chapel’s front.

Wat Doi Suthep It is a tremendous temple complex with a visual delight every time you turn your head. It is popular with the tour buses, but wait for the tour to move on and enjoy. Give yourself plenty of time and you will not be disappointed.

Wat Pha Lat This temple is the ancient precursor (lower on the mountain) than Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. While a little less grand than it's younger sibling, it is steep with history, reverence, and peace. Boasting beautiful views of the city of Chang Mai, it is built on a stream with a seried of waterfalls. A terrific place for meditation or simple reflection. Go!!

Tha Phae Gate Romantic, Beautiful, Enchanting - these are the three words that I could sum up experiencing one of Chiang Mai's historic gates - The Tha Phae gate. When the city was founded by King Mangrai in 1296 these gates together with other gates (Chang Puak, Chiang Mai, Pratu Soan Dok) protect the old city. Tha Phae gate lies on the east of the city and made of Red bricks stone
