Pickup runs on a staggered schedule depending on where you’re staying (between 4:30 and 5:00pm, 4:40 and 5:10pm, or 5:10 and 5:40pm) with the exact window depending on your hotel’s location in downtown Chiang Mai. First stop is Wat Umong, a forest temple built into a tunnel rather than laid out like a typical wat; the operator dates it to 1297. Walking through the tunnel to see the Buddha images inside is a different experience from most temple visits on this route.
From there it’s on to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, on the mountainside at roughly 1,056 metres, the temple locals say you haven’t really seen Chiang Mai without visiting. By night, the golden Lanna-style chedi is lit up and the city spreads out below in lights, a different view from the daytime crowds most visitors get. A licensed English-speaking guide covers both stops, with round-trip transfer from downtown hotels, admission fees, air-conditioned transport and travel accident insurance included.
Watch out: the cable car at Doi Suthep isn’t included. It’s a 20 baht add-on if you’d rather skip the steps. Gratuity for the guide and driver is separate too.
Rainy season runs May to October and the tour goes ahead regardless, so bring an umbrella or raincoat. Only bags that fit on your lap travel in the van.
