Sixty kilometres sounds brutal until you realise the route is mostly flat, partly on a scenic train from Chiang Mai to Lamphun, and punctuated with long stops at the 11th-century Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, the handicraft village of Ban Tawai, and the forest monastery of Wat Umong. Seven hours, bike and helmet provided, lunch, snacks, drinks, and the train ticket all included.

The day starts at the Discova day-tour shop near Chang Puak Gate (the north gate of the old city), where you’re fitted to a bike before the train to Lamphun — an old local line that hugs the river and a rare way to cover distance without pedalling. From Lamphun you cycle back through countryside, visiting Wat Phra That Hariphunchai’s enormous golden chedi, stopping at Ban Tawai to watch woodcarvers at work, and winding through forest to Wat Umong’s meditation tunnels cut into a low hill outside the city. An English-speaking guide leads the whole route, with lunch and drinks along the way at a local restaurant. Insurance is included in the ticket.

Seven hours and 60km is less punishing than it reads because much of it is downhill or flat on quiet back roads. Reasonable fitness is needed, but no cycling skill beyond basic balance. Hotel pickup isn’t included — meet the guide at the shop. Wear padded shorts if you have them, light layers, closed shoes, and bring sunglasses. Sunscreen and a bandana for the sunnier stretches help. A solid pick for travellers who want to see Chiang Mai province at ground level rather than ticking off temples from a van, and the train segment is a genuine highlight rather than filler.
