Most Krabi four-island tours leave at 9am and return you to a crowded beach by mid-afternoon. This one flips the script: you meet at 1:30pm, cruise into the sunset on a traditional wooden junk boat, and finish after dark with a swim through bioluminescent plankton off Railay. Six to seven hours, and the pacing is slower than the morning runs, which is the whole point.

The meeting point depends on the season. November to April you meet in front of Railay Village Resort on the west side of the peninsula; May to October, in front of Railay Princess Resort on the east. From there you board the junk boat and set off for Koh Ya Wa Sam, a lesser-visited reef with snorkelling and paddleboarding, then on to Chicken Island and Poda Island, where limestone cliffs rise straight out of the water. As the sun drops you eat a Thai buffet dinner on deck with the sky going pink behind the karsts, then the boat moves to a darkened bay where you slip into the water for the bioluminescence. The microscopic plankton light up when you move, which sounds like a gimmick until you see it.

The boat has deck cushions, a cash cocktail bar, a freshwater shower and a Western-style bathroom. Snorkel gear (including prescription masks to buy onboard), kids’ sizes, English, Spanish and Thai-speaking guides, and free-flowing water, juice, tea, coffee, snacks and fruit are included. Groups cap at 15. Hotel pickup is not included but Railay is walkable from most Railay hotels.

Bioluminescence needs dark water and is brightest on nights with little moon, so check the lunar calendar for your dates if it matters to you. A quick-dry layer for the evening, reef-safe sunscreen and a waterproof phone pouch are the three things to pack.
