Chiang Mai Ethical Elephant Sanctuary, Half-Day

Chiangmai Elephant Care has run this sanctuary since 2017, and the half-day format keeps things to a single loop: pickup from your Chiang Mai hotel lobby, about 90 minutes on the road through farmland, then a change into a sanctuary uniform before meeting the elephants. Two time slots run daily: morning pickup 8-8:30am with drop-off around 2pm, or afternoon pickup 12-12:30pm with drop-off around 5:30pm. Groups are capped at 9, smaller than most Chiang Mai elephant tours.

The visit is built around watching rather than riding: a briefing on elephant behaviour and the traditional organic herbal supplements used in their diet, then time walking through the sanctuary as the herd roams and socialises on its own terms. Lunch is included before the drive back. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent: both are flagged by the operator as things to pack.

Watch out: about 3 hours of the 5h45m is driving, roughly 90 minutes each way, so this is a driving-heavy half-day rather than a quick stop.
