Bua Tong is the waterfall you can actually climb. The limestone here is coated in mineral deposits that grip bare feet like sandpaper, so you walk up the tiers instead of sliding down them. That single detail sets the tone for this combo day out of Chiang Mai: hands-on, a bit unusual, and full of the kind of moments that make your photos look made up.

The day begins at the Three Kings Monument at 8am, then heads north to the Sticky Waterfalls for the barefoot climb. Spring water at the top is cold and drinkable straight from the source. From there you transfer to an ethical, no-ride elephant sanctuary where the animals roam in a forest enclosure. You watch them feed and bathe rather than sit on them — the operator is clear about this, and it shapes the whole visit. Thai lunch is served at a local restaurant between stops. The day winds down on a bamboo raft drifting through a quiet stretch of river, which after a waterfall climb and a walk with elephants is exactly the right pace.

Eight hours, moderate difficulty, up to 15 people. The barefoot climb needs some balance and reasonable knees — it’s not a hike, but it’s also not a stroll. Wear quick-dry clothes and bring a change for the ride home. Entrance fees and lunch are in the price; anything you pick up at the craft stops isn’t. The tour runs through the wet season, though the waterfall flow is stronger (and slightly more slippery) between July and October.

If you’re only doing one full-day tour out of Chiang Mai, this is the one that covers the most ground without feeling rushed. The no-ride elephant policy is the right call — worth confirming at booking if ethical sanctuaries matter to you, since other operators in the region still offer bathing sessions that the better sanctuaries have stopped running.
