A private sail around Ang Thong Marine Park from Koh Samui is a good fit for groups who want the islands without a crowded speedboat. The Red Dragon is a 78ft teak Thai yacht with a traditional sail, a sun deck, a furnished lounge and dining area, and a splash pool. The day lasts 8 hours 30 minutes from Koh Samui, and the group is private, up to 15 guests. Ko Samui Boat Charter operates the trip.

What the day looks like

After a round-trip hotel transfer, breakfast is included. The route passes the islands where bird’s nests are harvested, then reaches the first stop in the Ang Thong archipelago.

  • Sea kayaking, about 60 minutes. A guided paddle along the coast past limestone cliffs, caves, tunnels and a lagoon. A dinghy follows if you would rather not paddle.
  • Snorkelling at Koh Wao, about 60 minutes. The yacht sails north beyond the park waters to the Koh Wao group. Non-swimmers and young children can use a netted floating raft.
  • Lunch under way. A buffet lunch is served while the yacht passes Koh Lao Yu and other limestone islands, then Koh Thong Thaeng and Koh Wa Noi.
  • Blue Lagoon on Koh Mae Ko, about an hour in total. The “Emerald Lake”, called Talay Nai by locals. You can climb the steep stairs to a viewpoint over the park’s islands and look down on the enclosed saltwater lake, or stay on the beach.
  • The return. The yacht passes Koh Sam Sao and its natural stone bridge, the park headquarters on Koh Wua Talap and Phaluai Island before heading back to Koh Samui.

The itinerary can change with the weather and your preferences.

Itinerary

1

These islands are home to a mysterious and rarely seen phenomenon, the harvesting of bird`s nests.

2

Our first stop in the Ang Thong Marine Park archipelago is also the most remote and magical spot, exclusive to our tour. Go for a guided sea kayaking tour along the coastline to explore the dramatic cliffs, limestone islands, caves, magical tunnels, as well as a secret lagoon. Alternatively, hop on our dinghy that accompanies the kayaks.

3

Sail north beyond the Marine Park waters, to Koh Wao, where you will find some of the best snorkeling sites.

4

Sailing further north we will reach the Koh Wao island group, which offers some of the best sites to explore the tropical reef. It's considered one of the top 20 snorkeling sites in Thailand. We're the only non-speedboat vessel to reach this destination. We'll select the optimal site depending on conditions, to ensure you have the best underwater journey possible. After a short safety briefing, our crew will fit you with complete snorkeling gear, and take you on a guided underwater tour, to see some amazing marine life. Non-swimmers and young children are welcome to get into our netted floating raft, which allows you to see the tropical reef from the safety of a raft.

5

We head back to the marine park and will pass Koh Lao Yu to enjoy the scenery. At this point, we will offer you a delicious buffet lunch while you journey along Ang Thong park`s most interesting limestone islands, which rise from the sea as dramatic rock cliffs and bizarre rock formations.

6

Koh Thong Thaeng is one of the bigger islands in the Marine Park, and a beauty to behold

7

Next, we pass Koh Wa Noi on our way to Koh Mae Ko to see the Blue Lagoon.

8

As we head south, we will also pass Koh Sam Sao or three sister islands, with its notable natural stone bridge that extends out into the sea, with clean white sandy beaches.

9

Koh Mae Ko is where you will find the famous "Blue Lagoon", also known as the "Emerald Lake", which locals call "Talay Nai", meaning "inside sea". Alex Garland's novel The Beach drew on this lagoon, though the 2000 film was shot at Maya Bay on Koh Phi Phi Leh, not here. It is widely considered the highlight of the Ang Thong Marine Park. We are the last boat allowed to visit Koh Mae Ko, which means that we do not meet other organized tours.

10

Blue Lagoon Emerald Lake

Here you can decide to climb up to the viewpoint or relax on the secluded beach. Climb up the steep stairs along narrow ravines to reach a panoramic view of the Park's 42 islands. Once we've reached the top, you will venture to the other side to take a closer look at the hidden saltwater lake completely enclosed, which besides its beauty, also acts as a natural nursery for all sorts of marine life.

11

As we head back to Koh Samui, we will also pass Koh Wua Talap, the Marine Park headquarters.

12

Cruise past Phaluai Island, one of the few inhabited islands in the Ang Thong Marine Park, home to a small community of "sea gypsy" fishermen, which are the original people that settled in the Samui archipelago. Enjoy the scenic cruise back to Koh Samui, cool down with a few drinks and a banana split on the deck, or take a dip in our jacuzzi. On most days you will embrace wonderful views of the sunset that will remain with you for a lifetime.
