This seven-hour group tour, for up to nine people, goes to Sam Roi Yod, Thailand’s first coastal national park, known for its 300 peaks and for Phraya Nakhon Cave. It suits travellers who are happy to walk: the route includes a climb of about 430 metres to the cave, and the tour runs in Thai and English.
What the day looks like
The first stop is the fishing village of Ban Pu, where a boat takes you to the white sand of Laem Sala Beach. Birds and wild animals live in Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park around it. High waves sometimes stop the boat reaching Laem Sala. In that case you cross the mountain on foot, about 30 minutes each way, which is described as exhausting but comes with a view. The guide then adds a river boat trip on the Pranburi River after lunch.
From Laem Sala Beach, a climb of about 430 metres (1,410 ft) leads to Phraya Nakhon Cave, a large cave with a hole in the ceiling that lets sunlight in. Inside stands the Khuha Kharuehat Pavilion, built for King Chulalongkorn’s visit in 1890 and now the symbol of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. At certain times the sun shines directly on it. Swimming after the cave is only occasionally possible and depends on the season, waves and currents, so pack a swimsuit just in case.
Lunch is at a local Thai restaurant, then the boat returns to the fishing village. On the drive back to Hua Hin the guide stops at a pineapple plantation and explains how the fruit is grown in the area.
