Amazing Hill

Amazing Hill isn’t a hill you climb — it’s a stretch of Highway 2089, the Wang Muang-Muak Lek road, where the surrounding terrain plays a trick on your eyes. Stop a car at the marked dip, shift into neutral, and it appears to roll backward uphill. It’s a classic gravity hill: the road’s true slope runs the opposite way to what the landscape around it suggests, so a vehicle rolling downhill along a shallow, barely visible grade looks like it’s defying gravity. There’s no fee and no gate — it’s simply a section of public road that locals and passing drivers have turned into an informal stop.

The Thai name, เนินพิศวง (Nern Phitsawong), translates to roughly “wondrous hill,” which is a fair description of the reaction most people have the first time they watch a car “roll uphill” from a standstill. Don’t expect a formal viewpoint, a walking trail, or facilities — there’s no visitor centre, no signage explaining the physics, and no staff. What you’ll usually find is a car or two pulled over with someone demonstrating the trick to friends, and maybe a food cart parked nearby on weekends.

Watch out: This is a live road, not a closed-off attraction. There’s minimal shoulder to pull onto, so check for traffic behind you before slowing down, and don’t attempt the neutral-roll trick if another vehicle is close behind.

The spot sits in Salaeng Phan subdistrict, Wang Muang district, on the same road as The Tree Tunnel, a bamboo archway roughly 600 metres away — the two make a natural five-minute combined stop if you’re driving this route toward Muak Lek or Khao Yai. Realistically, that’s how most visitors encounter Amazing Hill: as a quick break on a longer drive through this part of Saraburi, not a planned destination in its own right.

Insider Tip: Weekday mornings have the least traffic, which matters here more than at most attractions — you need a genuinely quiet moment on the road to try the illusion safely.

Amazing Hill sits in Saraburi province, a short detour off the main route between Saraburi town and Khao Yai — combine it with The Tree Tunnel and, if you have more time, Muak Lek Arboretum, about 15 km further into the same upland stretch of the district.
