Muak Lek Reservoir

Muak Lek Reservoir is a free-entry dam lake in Saraburi’s Wang Muang district, about two hours by car from Bangkok on the western edge of the Khao Yai foothills. It’s open daily from roughly 08:00 to 18:00, with paddle boats and kayaks for rent along the shoreline — no ticket booth, no set programme, just a wide stretch of water framed by low hills.

The dam itself creates the main vantage point: a walking path runs along the top with views back across the reservoir toward the hills that mark the start of the Khao Yai range. Paddle boat and kayak operators set up near the access road, charging by the hour rather than a fixed park rate, so it’s worth agreeing the price before you push off. Early mornings are the quietest time, with mist sitting on the water and fewer day-trippers around; by mid-morning on weekends, local families and photography groups start arriving in numbers. A handful of vendors sell drinks and grilled snacks near the dam on busy days, but there’s no permanent food court, so most visitors bring their own lunch and eat at the shaded spots dotted along the bank.

Insider Tip: Weekday mornings before 9 AM are far calmer than weekends, when Bangkok day-trippers combine the reservoir with the Muak Lek grape farms up the road. If you want the water to yourself, go on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

Watch out: Facilities are minimal — no shade structures over most of the shoreline, and boat rental pricing isn’t standardised, so confirm the hourly rate with the operator before you commit. There’s also no lifeguard cover, so treat the water as unsupervised.

Muak Lek Reservoir works best as one stop on a loop rather than a destination on its own: pair it with the nearby grape gardens for lunch, or continue on to Khao Yai National Park if you’re heading further into the hills. The cool season (November–February) gives the most comfortable conditions for sitting out by the water; by April the exposed dam path gets uncomfortably hot in the middle of the day.
