Ao Bo Thonglang

Ao Bo Thonglang is a small crescent bay in Mae Ramphueng subdistrict, Bang Saphan district, ringed by low rock islets that break up incoming swell and keep the water calm. Its main draw is a tidal sandbar: at low tide, a strip of white sand surfaces and connects the beach to a rock islet called Koh Hua Pin in the middle of the bay, so you can walk out across what’s normally seabed. Entry is free, and the bay is open daily, roughly 08:00-18:00.

The bay’s near-circular shape and surrounding rocks mean the water stays shallow and unusually still compared with open beaches nearby, which is part of why it’s popular for swimming with kids. The sandbar walk is the main event — time it around low tide, since at high water the connecting strip disappears completely and the islet is only reachable by swimming. A handful of food stalls line the beach selling drinks and simple seafood, and beach chairs are available to rent for the day.

Ao Bo Thonglang gets noticeably less traffic than Bang Saphan’s bigger beaches, especially on weekdays, which makes it a reasonable stop if you’re looking to get away from the crowds at Hat Ban Krut or the main strip further south. Sunrise and early morning are the calmest times to be on the sand before any day-trippers arrive; the low walls of rock around the bay also make it a sheltered spot to watch the tide turn.

Insider Tip: Check a tide table before you set out — the sandbar to Koh Hua Pin is only walkable for a window of an hour or two either side of low tide, and turning up at high water means there’s no “parted sea” to see.

Watch out: Currents can strengthen in the channel between the islets as the tide rises, so don’t linger on the sandbar past the point it starts narrowing. If you’re caught by a rip current elsewhere along the bay, swim parallel to the shore rather than straight back in.

By car, Ao Bo Thonglang is reached via Highway 4 to the Bang Saphan turn-off around kilometre 397, then Highway 3169 and the coastal Klang Ao road running past Ao Mae Ramphueng, the neighbouring beach in the same subdistrict. There’s no public transport directly to the bay, so a car, motorbike, or taxi from Prachuap Khiri Khan or Bang Saphan town is the practical way in. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and check the flag system if one’s posted, since lifeguard coverage here is minimal.
