Koh Ram Ra

Koh Ram Ra is a small rocky island about 300m off Ban Krut beach in Thap Sakae district, on the Gulf of Thailand side of Prachuap Khiri Khan — not the Andaman coast, despite how often that gets assumed for a Thai island this size. A handful of fishing families live here, and the shallow reef ringing the shoreline is locally rated as one of the healthier stretches of coral on this part of the Gulf coast, used as a breeding ground by various reef fish and marine life.

The appeal is simple: snorkel the reef, walk the small beach, and leave. At low tide the channel between the island and Ban Krut beach shallows out enough that confident swimmers wade or swim across rather than booking a boat — a rare case of a Thai island you can reach on foot in the right conditions. Longtail boats from the Ban Krut area cover the crossing at other tide states or for anyone who would rather not swim it. There is no pier, no vendor stalls, and no shade structure on the island itself, so this is a bring-your-own-everything trip: water, reef-safe sunscreen, and snorkel gear if you have it.

The reef sits in shallow water close to shore, which makes it forgiving for less confident swimmers and a workable option for kids under close supervision, though visibility drops fast once wind picks up in the afternoon. The island itself is small enough to walk around in well under an hour — this is a reef stop, not a half-day island to wander.

Watch out: the same shallow, reef-lined channel that makes wading possible at low tide disappears at high tide, and currents around the gap can pick up with wind. Check the tide table before planning to swim across, and don’t attempt it in rough seas.
