Ao Noi and Ao Prachuap are two of the three connected bays that give Prachuap Khiri Khan its old nickname, Mueang Sam Ao — Three Bays Town. Ao Noi curves along the coast just north of the provincial capital; Ao Prachuap fronts the town itself, backed by fishing piers and limestone hills. A paved coastal road connects the two, popular with locals for running and cycling at dawn and dusk.

The water in both bays is shallow and calm most of the year, better suited to swimming and a slow walk along the sand than snorkelling — there’s no fringing reef directly offshore, though rocky outcrops separate the two beaches. Longtail fishing boats work the bay early each morning, and small piers along Ao Prachuap still land the day’s catch for the market. Casuarina and coconut trees line the back of the sand, giving patchy shade through the afternoon. A handful of simple seafood restaurants sit near the Ao Prachuap waterfront, serving grilled fish and squid landed that same morning.

Insider Tip: Ride the coastal road between the two bays around sunset — it’s flat, paved, and gives an open view back toward Khao Chong Krachok and the limestone islets offshore, with none of the traffic of the town’s main street.

Both beaches stay quiet outside Thai public holidays. Weekday visitors will see more local families and fishermen than tourists; weekends bring a modest local crowd for picnics rather than the beach-club scene of Hua Hin, an hour’s drive north. That’s the trade-off — fewer facilities, but a working coastal town rather than a resort strip.

Key Facts:
  • Entry fee: Free
  • Hours: Daily, roughly 08:00-18:00
  • Swimming: Shallow and calm; no offshore reef
  • Getting there: 5-10 minutes by motorbike or songthaew from Prachuap Khiri Khan town centre
  • Best time: November-February for cooler, drier weather

Watch out: There’s minimal shade directly on the sand at midday — bring your own umbrella or plan a visit for morning or late afternoon.

Cool-season months (November-February) bring the most comfortable weather, though sea breezes keep both bays pleasant most of the year. Access is easy by motorbike, songthaew, or a short taxi ride from anywhere in town. Bring cash — most beachside food stalls don’t take cards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Ao Noi and Ao Prachuap the same beach?
No — they are two of the three connected bays that give Prachuap Khiri Khan its old nickname, Mueang Sam Ao (Three Bays Town). Ao Noi curves north of town, Ao Prachuap fronts the town centre itself, and a paved coastal road links the two — locals use it for morning runs and cycling. A third bay, Ao Manao, lies further south and has its own attraction page.
Is there an entry fee for Ao Noi or Ao Prachuap?
No. Both are open public beaches with no admission charge, open roughly 08:00-18:00.
Is this the Gulf of Thailand or the Andaman Sea?
The Gulf of Thailand. Prachuap Khiri Khan sits on the eastern, Gulf-facing coast of the isthmus — the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga) is on the opposite side of the peninsula.
Can you swim at Ao Noi and Ao Prachuap?
Yes. Both bays are shallow and sheltered, with calm water most of the year, making them more suited to swimming and paddling than snorkelling — there's no coral reef directly offshore.
What else is nearby?
Khao Chong Krachok (Mirror Mountain), a hilltop temple with a 395-step climb and resident macaques, overlooks Ao Prachuap from the north. Ao Manao, a Royal Thai Air Force beach with a WWII history, is a short drive south.
