Ban Kru Eua

Baan Kru Eua is the preserved home of Eua Sunthornsanan, the bandleader who founded Thailand’s Suntaraporn orchestra in 1939 and helped define luk grung, the orchestral pop style that carried Thai popular song through the mid-20th century. The Rama V-era wooden house at 193-195 sits directly on the Amphawa canal. Entry is free, but it only opens Saturday and Sunday, 11:00-20:00, alongside the weekend floating market next door.

Inside the House

The rooms hold old photographs, band instruments and personal memorabilia tracing Eua’s career — from his early years arranging music for Thai radio orchestras to founding Suntaraporn, the group whose recordings shaped how a generation of Thais understood popular song. There’s no audio guide or English signage system to speak of; most of what you get comes from the objects themselves and the house they sit in, which is part of the point. This isn’t a polished national museum — it’s a family home turned into a modest tribute.

Atmosphere & Timing

Because the house only opens the same two days as the floating market, it gets folded into the wider Amphawa weekend crowd rather than standing as its own destination. Expect a steady trickle of visitors rather than a queue — most people passing through are here for the market stalls and stop in on the way past. The building itself stays quiet inside even when the canal outside is busy with boats and vendors.

Practical

The house is a short walk from the main Amphawa pier, easy to find once you’re already at the market. There’s no dedicated parking; use the same lots visitors use for the floating market itself. Bring small change for the donation box — the museum survives on it, since there’s no ticket price.

Insider Tip: Visit after 18:00 if you’re doing Amphawa on a Saturday. The market crowd thins out toward the food stalls further down the canal by early evening, and the house stays open until 20:00 — you’ll often have the rooms to yourself.

Watch out: This is a weekends-only attraction. If you’re touring Amphawa’s old shophouses on a weekday, the door will be locked regardless of the hour.
