Ban Non Salao in Phu Khiao district is one of the biggest weaving villages in Chaiyaphum, where almost every household works a loom. Its signature is khit — a supplementary-weft technique that builds raised geometric patterns into the cloth, worked here mostly in cotton, with silk thread used in some pieces. This is a long-standing Lao-descent Isan weaving community, with a housewives’ weaving cooperative running since the late 1970s.

Watch weavers pick out khit patterns thread by thread using a “mai khit” pattern stick, and dye yarn with natural and modern colours. The work on sale runs from mudmee (ikat) cotton cloth to khit-patterned scarves, shawls, table linens, cushion covers and bags — buy directly from the makers and the money goes straight to the household. Note that the village weaves bought cotton and silk thread rather than raising its own silkworms, so the visit is about the loom work and the patterns rather than a full silkworm-to-cloth farm.

Peace permeates this rural village where time moves to the gentle rhythm of daily craft work rather than modern urgency. The atmosphere feels authentic and unhurried, with weavers focused intently on their looms while children play nearby and elderly villagers share stories under shady trees. Photography is generally welcomed, creating opportunities to capture both the intricate details of the weaving process and candid moments of village life that showcase Thailand’s enduring cultural traditions.

Morning visits between 9-11 AM offer the best experience when natural light illuminates the work areas and most weavers are actively working. The village is accessible by car or motorbike from Chaiyaphum town, though public transportation options are limited. Bring comfortable walking shoes for exploring the village paths and consider purchasing textiles directly from the artisans to support their craft. This authentic cultural experience provides valuable insight into Thailand’s textile heritage while supporting traditional livelihoods in rural communities.
