Phra That Kut Chok stands at Ban Yang Noi in Kaset Sombun district, one of Chaiyaphum’s oldest religious sites — local accounts put its origins at roughly 1,200 years, predating the Khmer influence that later spread across much of Isan. What remains today are two brick chedis, down from an original three; their brickwork and proportions follow a Lao architectural tradition rather than Khmer, with a style generally associated with the 14th and 15th centuries. Entry is free, and the site is open daily from 08:30 to 16:30.

The two chedis differ in form. The first has a hollow relic chamber, inside which sits a large limestone Buddha image alongside a sandstone Buddha carved in the earth-touching Maravijaya pose — the gesture marking the Buddha’s victory over temptation. The second chedi tapers to a narrower point, a shape that echoes Phra That Phanom, the much larger and more famous stupa in Nakhon Phanom province. Both structures show the weathering of centuries of monsoons, and the site remains an active place of merit-making for the surrounding villages rather than a roped-off ruin.

Local families visit to make merit and leave flowers at the base of the chedis, and the grounds stay quiet outside of festival days — this isn’t a stop that draws crowds, which is part of its appeal if you’re touring Chaiyaphum’s lesser-known historical sites. Mornings are coolest for a visit; there’s limited shade around the chedis themselves.

Insider Tip: There’s little signage in English on-site, so it helps to look up the two chedis’ history before arriving — without context, it’s easy to walk past two brick stupas without realising how old the site actually is.

Watch out: Modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) is expected, as at any active religious site, even though this is more archaeological site than working temple.

Getting here from Chaiyaphum town takes around two hours by car, roughly 90 km into Kaset Sombun district — there’s no direct public transport, so a private vehicle or hired driver is the practical way to combine it with other Kaset Sombun stops.

How old is Phra That Kut Chok?
Local accounts put the site at roughly 1,200 years old, though the brickwork of the two standing chedis is generally dated later, in the architectural style associated with the 14th-15th centuries. Treat exact dating as approximate.
Is there an entry fee?
No, entry is free. The site is open daily from 08:30 to 16:30.
How far is it from Chaiyaphum town?
About 90 km, in Kaset Sombun district — figure on close to two hours by car on provincial roads.
What's inside the chedis?
One chedi has a hollow relic chamber holding a large limestone Buddha image and a sandstone Buddha in the earth-touching (Maravijaya) pose. The second is a tapering spire, similar in form to Phra That Phanom in Nakhon Phanom.
