Ban Pha Thung Ancient Pattern Weaving Centre

This community weaving centre in Huai Haeng Subdistrict, Ban Rai district, keeps alive the textile tradition of the Lao Khrang people, descendants of Lao settlers who migrated into this part of Uthai Thani generations ago. Weavers work cotton on hand looms with natural dyes, entry is free, and the centre is open daily 09:00-17:00.

Experience

The centre’s patterns are supplementary-weft designs woven in distinct vertical bands, said to have been passed down for two to three centuries — a span the community describes through oral memory rather than written record. Finished pieces on sale include Pha Sin tube skirts, loincloths, tote bags, ordination headscarves, and blankets and bedding sets, all produced on-site rather than sourced from elsewhere.

One tradition explains the bedding sets specifically: brides once hand-wove their own wedding bedding, spinning the cotton and weaving each piece themselves before marriage. It’s remembered now as a custom rather than something still expected, but it’s part of why the bedding patterns are treated as some of the centre’s most significant pieces. The centre’s work earned a national Best OTOP product award in 2003, recognition that helped establish it as a known name among Thailand’s community weaving groups rather than a purely local operation.

Atmosphere & Timing

This is a small, working community enterprise — a handful of looms under an open-sided shelter — rather than a formal institute or a large tourist facility. Weavers are most likely to be at their looms on weekday mornings; a weekend visit may find fewer people actively working, though the shop and finished pieces are still on display.

The centre has parking and a restroom on-site, useful given its rural location in Ban Rai district away from town amenities.
