Ban Pha Thung Ancient Pattern Weaving Centre
ศูนย์ผ้าทอลายโบราณบ้านผาทั่ง
Also known as: Ban Pha Thang Weaving Centre, Lao Wiang Ancient Weaving Centre, บ้านผาทั่ง
This community weaving centre in Huai Haeng Subdistrict keeps alive the textile tradition of the Lao Wiang people, descendants of Laotians who settled in central Thailand generations ago. Local weavers work cotton on hand looms with natural dyes, reproducing old supplementary-weft patterns said to have been passed down for two to three centuries — a span that is traditional rather than precisely documented. You can see and buy Pha Sin tube skirts, loincloths, tote bags, ordination headscarves, blankets and bedding sets made here. In the past brides would hand-weave their own bedding set for marriage, spinning the cotton and weaving each piece themselves; it is remembered as a custom now rather than something still required. The centre won a national Best OTOP product award in 2003. It is a small, working community enterprise rather than a formal institute or a large tourist facility. Open daily 09.00–17.00; tel. (66)8 3316 5128.
