Bang Phra reservoir

Bang Phra Reservoir is a man-made freshwater lake in Si Racha district, Chonburi, that does double duty as regional water supply and one of the province’s better outdoor recreation spots — cycling, birdwatching and fishing rather than beach crowds. A road circles the entire reservoir, roughly 20 km, with a separated bike lane along part of the loop, making it a regular weekend circuit for cyclists based around Si Racha and Bang Saen.

The reservoir’s northeast corner holds a non-hunting area recognised among birdwatchers as one of the more productive sites in eastern Thailand. Wetland, grassland, scrub and open brushy woodland sit close together here, and that mix of habitats pulls in a wide range of resident and migratory species — herons and kingfishers working the shallows are the easiest spot for a casual visitor, but the site draws dedicated birders specifically for the migration-season variety. Away from the birding corner, families fish from the banks or rent boats to work the quieter coves, and small floating or lakeside restaurants serve the catch — carp, catfish and tilapia are the usual species.

Insider Tip: Visit early morning if birdwatching is the goal — activity drops off once the day heats up, and the perimeter road itself is reported to have restricted access hours (roughly 6–9am and 4–7pm on weekdays), so an early start avoids being turned away.

Watch out: This is a working reservoir, not a landscaped park — expect basic facilities, uneven banks in places, and little English signage. Bring your own water and sun protection; shade is patchy around most of the loop.

Cooler months from November through February bring the most comfortable conditions for cycling or a full loop on foot, though the reservoir is used year-round. There’s no entrance fee for general access, and boat and fishing-gear rental is available informally from vendors near the water.

Bang Phra falls within the wider Bang Saen area on the Chonburi coast, and pairs well with two other Si Racha-area stops: Grand Canyon Chonburi, a flooded former quarry with turquoise water a short drive away, and Ko Loi Si Racha, the causeway-linked temple islet in Si Racha town.
