Chaloklum Sunday Walking Street

Every Sunday evening, the fishing village of Chaloklum on Koh Phangan’s north coast turns its main street over to a walking street market. It is one of the island’s most local markets — set in a working harbour village about 20 minutes by scooter from Thong Sala, well away from the Haad Rin party scene — and it runs from before sunset until around 22:00.

What to Expect

The market stretches along the village’s main street and out onto the pier, so you eat with the boats and the bay in view. Because Chaloklum is a real fishing community rather than a resort strip, the crowd is a mix of locals and the handful of visitors who make the trip north, and the feel is closer to a village gathering than a tourist market.

Food is the draw. Stalls sell fresh seafood landed by the village’s own boats, alongside Thai standards, vegetarian plates, and a run of international options from pad thai to wood-fired pizza, finished off with grilled meats and Thai sweets. Between the food, you will find craft sellers, clothing, and souvenirs, with live music adding to the evening.

Getting There

There is no public transport to speak of, so most visitors ride a scooter the 20 minutes north from Thong Sala, or arrange a taxi or songthaew. The coastal road is straightforward, and Chaloklum is signposted. If you are staying on the north coast around Chaloklum or Bottle Beach, the market is on your doorstep; from the south of the island it is a half-evening trip.

If you are on Koh Phangan across a full weekend, pair this with the bigger Thong Sala Saturday Walking Street the night before — the two markets run on consecutive evenings and have completely different characters. Chaloklum also makes a natural base for the boat trip to Bottle Beach, one of the island’s best-kept stretches of sand.
