Bottle Beach

Koh Phangan Reviewed Jul 2026
Entry Free

Bottle Beach, or Haad Khuat, is a secluded bay on the remote north coast of Koh Phangan. There’s no easy road in, which is the whole point: it stays quiet, undeveloped and backed by jungle and limestone, with just a few rustic bungalows and simple restaurants on a stretch of soft sand. You reach it by longtail boat from Chaloklum (around 400 THB, about 30 minutes) or on foot via a 1.5-hour trail. Entry is free.

What it’s like

This is one of Koh Phangan’s best “get away from it all” beaches — a calm, clear bay good for swimming, with a little snorkelling off the rocks at each end. Development is deliberately minimal: a scatter of bungalows, a few places to eat, and not much else. That makes it a lovely day trip for anyone tired of the busier south, and a genuinely quiet overnight for those who want no nightlife and don’t mind basic facilities.

Insider Tip: Take the boat in and hike out (or vice versa) if you’re up for it — you get both the easy arrival and the coastal-trail views. Carry enough cash for the day; there are no ATMs, and boats and bungalows are cash-only.

Getting there

The simplest route is a longtail from Chaloklum: roughly 400 THB each way, about 30 minutes, with boats running from around 08:00 to 17:00 and leaving once four or more passengers are aboard (solo travellers may wait). Alternatively, hike in — about 1.5 hours on either a coastal or a jungle trail from near Chalok Lum, marked with paint blazes — or take a 4WD songthaew down the rough dirt track from the east.

Watch out: The last boats back leave in the late afternoon, so don’t get stranded — confirm the return time with your boatman. The hiking trails are hot and steep in places; take water and proper shoes, not flip-flops.

Along the same north coast, the snorkelling islet of Koh Ma off Mae Haad makes a good pairing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get to Bottle Beach?
Three ways. The easiest is a longtail boat from Chaloklum — about 30 minutes and roughly 400 THB each way (boats run ~08:00–17:00 and leave once 4+ people are aboard). You can also hike in (about 1.5 hours on a coastal or jungle trail from near Chalok Lum), or come by 4WD songthaew on the rough dirt road.
Where is Bottle Beach?
On the remote north coast of Koh Phangan, tucked between headlands east of Chaloklum. Its lack of a proper road is exactly why it stays quiet and undeveloped.
Is there anywhere to stay or eat?
A handful of rustic bungalows and simple beach restaurants, and that's about it — no big resorts. Bring cash; facilities are basic.
Is it good for swimming and snorkelling?
Yes — the bay is calm with clear water and soft sand, good for swimming, and there's some snorkelling off the rocks at either end. It's shallow and gentle near shore.
Should I do it as a day trip or stay over?
Most people day-trip in by boat. Staying a night is for those who want to be somewhere genuinely quiet after dark, with no nightlife and limited power — part of the appeal, but know what you're choosing.
