Chaomae Song Nang Phi Nong Shrine

Chaomae Song Nang Phi Nong Shrine on the Mekong riverbank in Mueang Mukdahan honours two sisters whose deaths are woven into the founding story of the town. According to local legend, the pair — often described as Lao princesses — drowned in a boat accident on the river while travelling to the site, and a shrine was raised in their memory by a sugar palm tree around the time Mukdahan itself was founded. Today the shrine and its neighbour, Chao Pho Chao Fa Mung Mueang Shrine, are regarded as the twin guardian spirits of the city.

This is a spirit shrine (san chao) rather than a Buddhist temple, though the two traditions sit comfortably side by side here as they do across much of northeastern Thailand. Worshippers bring incense, flowers, and offerings for the two sisters, seeking protection and good fortune rather than merit in the strictly Buddhist sense. The shrine sees a steady flow of local visitors through the day rather than a scheduled service, and its riverside setting on Samran Chai Khong Road puts it within easy walking distance of Indochina Market.

The busiest time at the shrine falls once a year, on the full moon of the sixth lunar month (roughly May), when Mukdahan holds a joint festival honouring both guardian shrines. Outside that date it’s a quiet, everyday stop — locals dropping in to pay respects on their way past rather than a destination that draws crowds.

Insider Tip: Combine a visit with a walk along the Mekong riverbank and a stop at Indochina Market — all three sit within a few minutes of each other in the same stretch of Mueang Mukdahan.

Watch out: As with any Thai shrine, cover your shoulders and knees and remove your shoes before entering any covered prayer area. There’s no dedicated visitor parking lot — expect roadside parking on Samran Chai Khong Road.
