Phaya Si Phuchong Mukda Nakkharat

A white marble naga stretches 51.4 metres along the Mekong riverbank at Kaeng Kabao in Mukdahan’s Wan Yai district, its head raised 11.11 metres above the rapids and facing the river toward Laos. Phaya Si Phuchong Mukda Nakkharat is built and clad entirely in pale marble rather than gilded or painted — locally described as the largest marble-clad naga statue in Thailand — and it’s one of three naga monuments scattered around Mukdahan province tied to local naga-worship traditions; this one is known as the “earth naga.”

The statue sits at Kaeng Kabao, a stretch of exposed limestone rapids on the Mekong about 35km from Mukdahan town, in Ban Na Kaen Noi village. Visitors walk beneath the naga’s raised body along a marked path — a common gesture at Thai naga shrines, believed to bring good fortune — before continuing to the riverbank itself. The white marble catches direct sun hard in the middle of the day, throwing sharp light and shadow across the scales; early morning or late afternoon light is considerably kinder for photos, and for standing under it without squinting.

Because the statue shares its site with the rapids, a visit here doubles as a stop at Kaeng Kabao itself — in the dry season the water drops to reveal sandbars and small islands across the rock shelf, and riverside vendors sell moo han, a local grilled-pork dish, from stalls near the car park. It’s a genuine local destination rather than a tour-bus stop: expect Thai families and day-trippers from Mukdahan town rather than crowds of foreign visitors.

Insider Tip: Go in the late afternoon. The marble reflects low sun well, and the Kaeng Kabao rapids alongside it are at their most photogenic with the water catching the same light.

Don’t mix this up with Mukdahan’s other two naga monuments — Phaya Anantanakharat and Phaya Si Mukda Maha Muni Nilapala Nakharat — which stand at different sites elsewhere in the province and aren’t part of the same visit.
