Chom Phra Castle

Chom Phra Castle is a Khmer stone sanctuary, not a castle in the European sense — prasat is the Thai word for a sacred Khmer structure, and this one is an Arokayasala, a hospital chapel built under Jayavarman VII around the late 12th century. It has one tower: a square central prang with a front porch, facing east, paired with a single rectangular library building, all enclosed by a laterite wall with a cross-shaped gateway and two ponds outside. That’s the standard four-part Arokayasala layout Jayavarman VII used at more than a hundred sites across his empire — Chom Phra is one surviving example, not a unique design. Entry is free, daily 08:30-16:30, about 28 km from Surin town via Route 214.

Fine Arts Department excavations here recovered a Vajrasattva image and a bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara head, both carved in the Bayon style associated with Jayavarman VII’s temple-building programme — evidence that this small rural shrine once held real devotional sculpture, even if most of it has since moved to museum storage. What’s left on-site is the laterite structure itself: weathered blocks, a carved doorway, and the low library annex, standing alone in rice paddy country rather than inside any larger walled complex.

Insider Tip: Don’t come expecting scale — this is a single small tower you can walk around in a few minutes, not a sprawling temple complex like Phanom Rung or Phimai. The value here is the setting: laterite ruins in working rice fields, with none of the crowds or entrance fees of Surin’s bigger Khmer sites.

Watch out: There’s no visitor centre, shade, or facilities on-site, and public transport doesn’t reach Chom Phra district reliably — you’ll need your own car or a hired driver from Surin.

If Khmer archaeology is what draws you to this corner of Isan, Prasat Hin Ban Phluang and Prasat Ta Khwai elsewhere in Surin province are worth pairing with this stop, and Surin National Museum in town gives context for the artefacts these smaller sites have yielded. Visit in the cooler morning or late afternoon to avoid midday heat, and bring water and a hat — there’s little shade on-site.
