Doi Pha Klong National Park

Doi Pha Klong National Park covers about 189 square kilometres of mixed deciduous forest across Long, Mueang, and Sung Men districts of Phrae province, roughly an hour south of Phrae town. Entry costs 100 THB for foreign visitors and 20 THB for Thai nationals, open 08:00 to 16:30 daily.

The park’s best-known feature is Suan Hin Maharat, a field of large sandstone boulders scattered through dry dipterocarp forest — weathered into shapes that have earned individual names from locals over the years, and the main reason most visitors come. A second stop, Kaeng Luang and Tham Erawan, is a stretch of wide rock rapids on the Yom River; during and just after the rainy season the water crashes over the exposed rock shelf loudly enough to hear well before you see it. The forest itself is mixed deciduous and dry dipterocarp woodland rather than dense rainforest, with ground orchids and herbs growing through the understory and dracaena among the drier stands.

Wildlife here includes serow, barking deer, wild boar, and civets, along with birdlife that picks up noticeably in the cool season when migrants such as minivets arrive from further north. None of it is guaranteed on a day visit — this is working forest, not a wildlife park — but the rock formations and river rapids are reliable regardless of what wildlife shows up.

Insider Tip: Visit Kaeng Luang soon after the rains ease, from around October, when the Yom River is still running hard over the rapids — by the dry season the flow drops off considerably.

Cool season, November through February, gives the most comfortable hiking conditions. Reaching the park requires private transport — it’s in Long district with no useful public transport link, so a car or motorbike from Phrae town is the practical option. Bring sturdy shoes, water, and rain gear if visiting during the wet season. For another Phrae national park to compare against, Wiang Kosai National Park and Mae Yom National Park are both a further drive but worth combining into a longer forest-and-park itinerary.
