Fisherman’s Village in Bophut is home to Koh Samui’s best-known walking street. Three evenings a week the old quarter’s narrow seafront lanes — lined with century-old Chinese shophouses now holding cafés, bars, and boutiques — close to traffic and fill with market stalls. Friday is the headline night, big enough to draw visitors from across the island; Monday and Wednesday are quieter, more local affairs.

Key Facts:
  • When: Monday, Wednesday & Friday, ~17:00–23:00 (Friday is the biggest)
  • Where: Fisherman’s Village, Bophut, north coast of Koh Samui
  • Entry: Free
  • Best for: Quality crafts and fabrics, seafront atmosphere, the Friday beer garden
  • Nearest landmark: Bophut seafront / old pier

What to Eat

The food spans the usual island favourites and then some — pad thai, banana pancakes, grilled skewers, tempura seafood, cakes, and sweets — cooked along the lanes and at the stalls that open onto the beach. Prices are higher than a mainland market because this is Samui, but the spread is wide and the seafront setting is part of what you are paying for. On Fridays, head for the roundabout about halfway down, where a dozen bars set up a beer garden with cocktails from around 70 THB.

Shopping

The shopping here is better than most island markets. Alongside the inevitable T-shirts and souvenirs, you will find genuinely good local fabrics, jewellery, handicrafts, and independent fashion — partly because the village’s permanent boutiques stay open through the market. It rewards a slow browse rather than a quick lap.

When to Go

Friday is the night to come if you want the full market and the beer garden, but it is also the busiest — arrive early, around 17:30–18:00, to beat the crush and eat before the queues build. Monday and Wednesday are calmer and easier if you prefer space to wander. The market runs year-round, weather permitting.

Getting There

Fisherman’s Village is in Bophut on the north coast, about 10 minutes from Chaweng and close to Bangrak (Big Buddha). A taxi or songthaew from Chaweng or Lamai is straightforward; many visitors ride a scooter. Parking fills quickly on Friday nights, so come early or get dropped off.

Nearby

The village’s permanent cafés, bars, and seafood restaurants are worth an evening in their own right, market night or not. Bophut also sits a short hop from the Big Buddha (Phra Yai) temple at Bangrak, an easy add-on before or after.
