Hat Mano Phirom

Hat Mano Phirom is a Mekong River sandbar in Ban Chanot village, Wan Yai district, that only appears in the dry season. As the river level drops from around November, sand exposed by the falling water widens into a beach that can stretch over 500 metres across and 1.5-2 kilometres along the bank by the height of the dry season. When the rains return from June, the Mekong rises again and covers it completely — this isn’t a beach you can rely on visiting year-round.

Villagers turn the exposed sandbar into a seasonal riverside hangout each dry season, setting up food stalls and renting out jet skis, banana boats, and inner tubes. Longtail boats, cargo vessels, and the odd passenger ferry cross the wide, muddy Mekong in view of the beach, with Laos visible on the far bank. The sand is pale and soft underfoot rather than the coral-white of Thailand’s Andaman beaches — this is a river beach through and through, right down to the earthy smell of the water and the mix of Thai and Lao voices along the shore.

Insider Tip: Aim for December through February. The sandbar is already exposed by then but the weather is still cool and dry — visit too late into the hot season and you’re dealing with 35°C-plus heat on open sand with almost no shade.

Watch out: don’t plan a special trip here outside the dry season. Arriving in the wet months means finding open river where the beach should be, with no sand at all. The Mekong’s current can also run strong even at the sandbar’s edge, so treat any swimming with the same caution as open water, not a calm resort pool.

The temple the beach is named after, Wat Manophirom, sits nearby on the same stretch of the Mekong and is worth combining with a dry-season visit. Mukdahan town itself is a short drive south for temples, markets, and the border crossing to Savannakhet.
