Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge (Mukdahan-Savannakhet)
สะพานมิตรภาพไทย-ลาว แห่งที่ 2
The Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge carries Route 12 traffic 1,600 metres across the Mekong River, linking Mukdahan on the Thai bank to Savannakhet in Laos. Opened in January 2007, it’s Thailand’s main overland link to central Laos and onward Route 9 into Vietnam. It’s a road bridge, not a footbridge — nobody strolls out to a midpoint marker for a photo, whatever some travel listings claim.
To actually cross, clear Thai immigration at the checkpoint, buy a 15 THB ticket, and board the mandatory shuttle bus that runs every 10-15 minutes. Walking or cycling onto the roadway isn’t permitted, so the “I walked to Laos” story doesn’t apply here. Bring your passport, and check current Lao visa requirements for your nationality before you queue — the rules vary and shift periodically.
Most travellers who come here without crossing view the bridge from Mukdahan’s own riverside promenade, where the Indochina Market sets up daily stalls of Lao silk, Vietnamese coffee, and cross-border handicrafts along the Mekong bank, with the bridge as backdrop. For a fuller view, Ho Kaeo Mukdahan tower rises a short distance inland, its observation deck taking in the river, the bridge, and Savannakhet’s skyline in one sweep.
The bridge anchors the East-West Economic Corridor, the Asian Highway route linking Vietnam’s port city of Da Nang through Laos to Mukdahan and on toward Myanmar. Freight trucks account for much of the crossing traffic — expect a working border, with warehouses and customs yards flanking the Thai approach, rather than a manicured tourist checkpoint.
Insider Tip: Sunset lights the Mekong gold from the promenade near Indochina Market — arrive before the stalls close for photos without the shuttle-bus queue crowding your shot.
Watch out: Several travel sites describe walking onto the bridge for free photos. That isn’t how the crossing works — everyone, on foot or otherwise, goes through the shuttle bus after immigration, and there’s no pedestrian lane on the span itself.
