Huai Pha Wang Reservoir

Huai Pha Wang Reservoir is a 530-rai lake in Na Wang district, about 45 km from Nong Bua Lam Phu town along Highway 210 toward Loei. The main draw isn’t the view from the bank — it’s the roughly 60 raft platforms moored on the water, where visitors eat a meal afloat with the surrounding hills reflected on the surface.

The reservoir holds more than 2.4 million cubic metres of water at up to 8 metres deep, ringed by low hills that give it more visual drama than the flat rice country typical of this stretch of Nong Bua Lam Phu province. Renting a spot on one of the floating raft restaurants (เรือนแพ) is the standard way locals spend an afternoon here — order grilled freshwater fish and som tam, and stay moored or get towed slowly around the lake depending on the operator. It’s a genuinely local scene: on weekends, groups of Isan families and friend circles fill the rafts, and English isn’t widely spoken by the vendors.

Away from the rafts, the shoreline has space for bank fishing and a quiet walk. Early morning brings mist off the water and the best chance of spotting herons and kingfishers working the margins; migratory waterbirds pass through in the cooler months. Photographers get strong reflected-sky shots at dawn before wind picks up over the open water.

Insider Tip: Go on a weekday if you want the lake to yourself — weekends bring enough raft traffic that the water’s stillness (and the birdlife) disappears by mid-morning.

Watch out: There’s no public transport out here and phone signal can be patchy on the approach roads — confirm your route before setting off, and don’t rely on a scooter with a near-empty tank; fuel stops thin out past Na Wang town.
