Kaeng Ka-am Waterfall

Kaeng Ka-am is a small waterfall on a tributary of the Huai Luang stream, which rises on Phu Tum in the Phu Phan mountain range and drops in a series of low, stepped rock shelves at Ban Kaeng Ka-am in Kalasin province’s Somdet district. It’s free to enter, open daily 8:30am–4:30pm, and sits about 15 km from Somdet town.

What sets Kaeng Ka-am apart from bigger northeastern waterfalls is the rock itself: long, straight lines of flat stone shelves that look almost hand-laid, stepping the stream down in short, even drops rather than one dramatic plunge. Shallow pools collect between the tiers, shallow enough to wade in during normal flow but not the kind of deep swimming hole you’d find at a larger Isan waterfall. Forest lines both banks, giving shade over most of the site.

Insider Tip: Flow is strongest June to October. Outside the rainy season the shelves can run close to dry, so if a swim or a proper waterfall photo is the goal, time it for rainy-season months.

The site is genuinely low-key — no gift shops, no crowds even on weekends, and limited facilities beyond a car park and the path down to the rocks. That’s part of the appeal if you want a quiet stop rather than a managed tourist attraction, but it also means bringing your own food, water, and a dry bag for anything electronic if you’re planning to wade in.

Watch out: The rock shelves get slick when wet. Wear shoes with real grip rather than flip-flops if you’re walking out onto the stone.

Access is by car via Route 213 from Somdet toward Sakon Nakhon’s Phu Phan district, or by Kalasin-Sakon Nakhon bus to Ban Kaeng Ka-am followed by a short walk. It’s a modest stop best combined with other nature spots in the province, such as Phu Phra Forest Park or Lam Pao Dam, rather than a standalone day trip.
