Phutthasathan Phu Po
พุทธสถานภูปอ
A reclining Buddha carved straight into the sandstone cliff face is the reason people climb Phu Po — not a statue, a relief cut into the rock inside a natural shelter partway up the mountain. Phutthasathan Phu Po rises to 336 metres above the rice plains north of Kalasin town, and the carving is old: Dvaravati-period work, likely 8th or 9th century, attributed to forest monks who lived here as a small ascetic community centuries before any formal temple existed on the site.
The lower relief sits about 5 metres up the slope from the base, a mahaparinirvana (reclining Buddha) scene roughly 5 metres long, its outline still legible despite the age of the stone. A second relief, carved in Sukhothai-era style, sits some 80 metres further up the mountainside. Wat In Pratan Phon, the working temple at the foot of Phu Po, is the modern anchor for what remains an active pilgrimage site — locals from Kalasin and neighbouring provinces still come to pay respects at both carvings, not just tourists working through a checklist. Past the reliefs, a forest trail continues to the summit plateau, a roughly ten-minute walk that opens onto sweeping views over the surrounding farmland.
Insider Tip: Go before 9 AM. The stone steps get full sun by mid-morning with almost no shade, and the summit trail is far more pleasant in cool, low-angle light.
Watch out: This is a working religious site, not a manicured park — expect uneven natural rock underfoot around both carvings, and dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) since local devotees are here to pray, not pose for photos.
The climb rewards patience more than fitness: steady stone steps most of the way, with a short scramble near the upper relief. Bring water — there’s no vendor stall at the top — and allow at least an hour round trip if you want to see both carvings and the summit trail without rushing.
