Kaeng Leng Chan

Kaeng Leng Chan is a reservoir on the western edge of Maha Sarakham town, built to store water for the city and now doubling as its most-used public park. It sits behind Rajabhat Maha Sarakham University, about 3 km from the town centre, and has been a student and family recreation spot since the university’s teacher-training-college days. Entry is free and the grounds are open daily from 06:00 to 18:00.

A paved path circles the reservoir, used all day for running, cycling, and evening walks — this loop is genuinely the main draw rather than any single sight. Rental kayaks and paddleboards go out onto the water, and locals fish from the bank or from small boats. A fish-breeding station on the grounds raises freshwater species for stocking rivers and reservoirs elsewhere in the Isan region, and a small aquatic-life exhibit near the water pavilion lets visitors see some of what’s raised there. Shade trees line stretches of the shore, with pavilions set up for picnics and rest stops along the loop.

Insider Tip: Time your visit for the hour before sunset. The reservoir faces open water to the west, and the flat surface throws back the colour without the building silhouettes or haze that spoil sunset views closer to the town centre.

Weekends bring the biggest crowds — families spreading out mats under the trees, groups jogging or cycling the loop, food carts selling grilled skewers and som tam near the main entrance. Weekdays are quieter, more of a local exercise circuit than a tourist stop. There’s no temple, museum, or headline attraction to centre a visit around; the appeal is the open water, the breathing room from town, and the loop path itself.

Watch out: English signage is minimal, and the food stalls sell simple, cash-only Isan street food rather than sit-down dining — come expecting a local park, not a curated visitor experience.

Come for exercise or an evening walk rather than a bucket-list sight — Kaeng Leng Chan earns its place as Maha Sarakham’s default green space, not as a headline attraction.
