Khao Rang

Khao Rang is a hill on the edge of Phuket Town, rising roughly 140-150 metres — high enough for a genuine panorama, low enough that there’s no real climb involved. You’ll sometimes see it listed at 536 metres; that number doesn’t match any elevation source we checked and appears to be a mix-up with Mai Thao Sip Song, Phuket’s actual highest peak elsewhere on the island. A paved road runs to the top, so this is a drive-up or scooter-up viewpoint, not a hike.

At the summit, a landscaped park holds a bronze statue of Phraya Ratsadanupradit (Khaw Sim Bee na Ranong), the early-1900s governor credited with introducing rubber cultivation to Phuket and shaping the province’s economy for a century afterward. Around the statue there’s a small fitness area, a children’s playground, and three cafes and restaurants sharing the view terrace — Tunk Ka Cafe gets the best word-of-mouth, with wooden platforms built out between the trees. From the terraces you look straight down over Phuket Town’s rooftops, with the coastline visible beyond on a clear day.

Watch out: long-tailed macaques live on the hill and have learned to associate visitors with food. They’re generally not aggressive if you leave them alone, but don’t feed them, don’t wave food or bags around, and give any monkey that approaches you space rather than a photo.

Insider Tip: Weekday mornings and late afternoons are quietest — weekends bring Phuket Town families up for the playground and the sunset view, and parking near the main terrace fills up fast after about 5pm.

Getting here is straightforward by scooter or taxi from central Phuket Town — the drive takes 10-15 minutes and parking near the summit is usually manageable outside peak sunset hours. There’s no public bus route directly to the top, so your own transport or a short taxi ride is the practical option. Bring water; even at this modest elevation, the exposed terraces catch full sun for most of the day.

If Khao Rang’s car park is packed, Khao Khat viewpoint elsewhere on the island offers a similar rooftop-and-coastline outlook with fewer crowds — worth knowing as a backup rather than treating Khao Rang as the only hilltop view over Phuket Town. Either way, this is a 45-minute stop rather than a half-day excursion: enough time to walk the terraces, read the statue’s plaque, and grab a coffee before moving on.
