Khao-Khat Views Tower

Khao Khat Views Tower is a public viewpoint on a hill in Wichit subdistrict, on the eastern side of Phuket between Chalong Bay and Cape Panwa. A paved stairway of roughly 200 steps — flanked by two elephant statues at the base — climbs about three or four storeys to a 360-degree platform over Chalong Bay, Cape Panwa, Koh Sire, Koh Bon and the smaller islands scattered along this stretch of coast. Entry is free, open daily from around 06:00 to 21:00.

Built as a Wichit district municipal project, the tower replaced what was once a genuinely awkward scramble up loose, light-brown rock — locals describe the old path as slippery underfoot, especially when wet. The current route is asphalt-paved with a marked walking track alongside the stairs, and a car park at the base means you don’t have to climb from the main road. At the top, the payoff is the sweep of the bay: boats scattered across Chalong, the wooded shoulder of Cape Panwa reaching south, and on clear days islands further out along the horizon.

Cloud and haze roll through often enough that a first visit can end in a flat, grey view — worth checking the weather before making the trip, or building in a second attempt if you’re staying nearby. Late afternoon tends to bring the clearest light on the bay, and mornings after rain occasionally deliver drifting low cloud below the platform, though it isn’t guaranteed. This isn’t a beach-town crowd draw; expect a handful of other visitors rather than a queue.

Watch out: the climb has no shade and can be tiring in the middle of the day — the paved surface helps with grip but not with the heat. Water and a hat are worth carrying even for a 10-15 minute ascent.

Insider Tip: Bring a wide-angle phone or camera lens if you have one — the platform is compact, and the best shots are panoramas rather than single-frame shots of any one bay.

Souvenir stalls and restrooms sit at the base near the car park, so this works as a short stop rather than requiring a packed picnic. There’s no public transport directly to the site — a rental scooter, car, or taxi from Phuket Town (about 15-20 minutes away) is the only practical way in. It pairs easily with other Phuket Town-area viewpoints, including Koh Sire, visible from the platform, and Khao Rang closer to the town centre.
