Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum, run by Thailand’s Department of Mineral Resources, sits a short drive from Phu Wiang National Park in Wiang Kao district, about 80 kilometres northwest of Khon Kaen city. Entry is 60 THB for foreign adults and 30 THB for children (20/10 THB for Thai nationals), open Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-17:00, closed Mondays.

The museum grew out of one of Southeast Asia’s most significant dinosaur discoveries: fossil bones found in the Phu Wiang hills in 1982 that were later identified as a new species of long-necked sauropod. Named Phuwiangosaurus sirindhornae in 1994 in honour of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, it anchors the main exhibition hall alongside casts and fragments tied to other Sao Khua Formation finds — the spinosaurid Siamosaurus suteethorni, identified from fossil teeth in the 1980s, and Siamotyrannus isanensis, an early relative of the tyrannosaur line. Between these and other partial finds, researchers count roughly nine dinosaur species identified from the wider Phu Wiang fossil beds, making this one of the richest Early Cretaceous sites in Asia.

Exhibits move from geology — how a humid, subtropical floodplain 130-plus million years ago became today’s sandstone hills — through to skeletal reconstructions and fossil casts you can get close to. It’s a smaller, more workmanlike museum than some travel write-ups suggest: a handful of exhibition rooms rather than a sprawling complex, with the actual excavation pits a separate short drive away inside Phu Wiang National Park, not literally underneath the building.

Key Facts:
  • Hours: Tuesday-Sunday, 09:00-17:00 (closed Mondays)
  • Entry: 60/30 THB (adult/child, foreigners); 20/10 THB (Thai nationals)
  • Distance from Khon Kaen city: About 80km northwest
  • Key find: Phuwiangosaurus sirindhornae, discovered 1982, named 1994
  • Species count: Roughly nine dinosaur species identified from the Phu Wiang fossil beds

Insider Tip: Pair the museum with the park in the same trip — the museum gives you the scientific context first, which makes the excavation pits and interpretive trails inside Phu Wiang National Park more interesting once you get there.

Watch out: Public transport barely reaches this corner of Wiang Kao district. Without your own car, budget for a private tour or a chartered songthaew from Khon Kaen rather than counting on regular buses.

Cooler months (November-February) make the drive and any time outdoors at the park more comfortable, though the museum’s air-conditioned halls are a fine escape from the heat any time of year. For a lighter, kid-focused alternative on the way in, the roadside Si Wiang Dinosaur Park has moving, roaring dinosaur models rather than fossils.

Frequently Asked Questions

What dinosaurs were actually found at Phu Wiang?
Phu Wiang has produced several genuine finds, most notably Phuwiangosaurus sirindhornae — a long-necked sauropod first found in 1982 and formally named in 1994 in honour of Princess Sirindhorn — along with the spinosaurid Siamosaurus suteethorni and the early tyrannosauroid Siamotyrannus isanensis. Researchers count roughly nine dinosaur species identified from the wider Phu Wiang fossil beds.
Is the museum built on top of the actual dig site?
Not directly — the museum building sits a short drive from several of the original excavation pits inside Phu Wiang National Park, rather than literally on top of them. The park's numbered dig sites are a separate stop from the museum itself.
What does it cost to visit the Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum?
60 THB for foreign adults and 30 THB for foreign children; Thai nationals pay 20 THB and 10 THB. It's open Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-17:00, and closed on Mondays.
How far is the museum from Khon Kaen city?
Roughly 80 kilometres northwest of central Khon Kaen. Public transport options are limited, so most visitors come by rented car or as part of an organised day tour.
Can you combine the museum with Phu Wiang National Park?
Yes — it's the natural pairing. The park holds the original fossil excavation pits and hiking trails, while the museum gives context with skeletal casts, real fossil fragments, and exhibits on how the Sao Khua Formation preserved these finds.
