Klong Pakpa

Khlong Pak Pra is the canal junction at Ban Pak Pra in Khuan Khanun district, Phatthalung, where several smaller waterways converge before draining toward Songkhla Lake. It’s the launch point for one of southern Thailand’s classic sunrise boat trips — a short run up the canal and into Thale Noi, the freshwater lake a couple of kilometres away, rather than a route that crosses into neighbouring Trang province. Viewing the canal from the bank costs nothing; chartering a longtail boat for the Pak Pra-Thale Noi loop runs roughly 1,000-1,200 THB, split among passengers, for a 2-3 hour trip.

The draw is what the boat passes on the way. Local fishermen work giant bamboo-framed lift nets called yor yak, lowering and raising them by hand along the channel. Water birds work the reed beds, and in the cooler months red lotus flowers open across parts of Thale Noi at dawn — a well-known photo subject locally. Water buffalo, kept semi-wild around the lake’s marshy edges, wade and sometimes swim between reed islands, unbothered by passing boats. Wooden houses on stilts line stretches of the canal near the village.

Insider Tip: Book the first boat out, around 6 AM. Later departures miss the calm water and the low light that makes the lift nets and lotus blooms worth photographing, and the canal gets busier with other boats as the morning goes on.

Watch out: There’s no scheduled public boat service — you need to arrange a charter with a local boatman at the Pak Pra pier, and prices aren’t fixed, so confirm the fare and route before boarding.

Thale Noi itself is worth knowing the significance of: it was Thailand’s first declared non-hunting area, in 1975, and its Khuan Khi Sian peat swamp became the country’s first Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance in 1998. Bring sun protection, insect repellent, and something waterproof for phones or cameras, since boat spray is routine on the open sections of the lake.
