Khlong Hu Rae
แก่งน้ำหูแร่
Khlong Hu Rae is a rock-and-sand weir across the Khlong Machuea canal in Bang Kaeo district, about 33km from central Phatthalung town. Locals come for the shade, not scenery on a grand scale — this is a small-town swimming hole and picnic spot, not a lake or limestone reservoir.
Tall trees line both banks of the canal, keeping the water and the wooden dining pavilions built over it noticeably cooler than the open road outside. In the dry season, the weir drops the water low enough for wading and splashing in the shallow pools it creates; in the early rainy months, when flow picks up, some visitors bring inflatable rings or small rafts to ride the current through the rapids. Restaurants set up along the bank serve southern Thai dishes to diners sitting with their feet in the water.
Insider Tip: Go on a weekday if you can — this is a popular weekend cooling-off spot for people from Bang Kaeo and the surrounding district, and the riverside pavilions fill up fast on Saturday afternoons.
There’s no formal viewpoint or trail system here — the appeal is sitting by moving water in the shade, ordering grilled fish, and letting kids play in the shallows. It’s a local recreation spot first and a photo stop second, best combined with a stop at Thale Noi or Khao Pu-Khao Ya National Park elsewhere in Phatthalung province rather than treated as a standalone day trip.
Watch out: By full rainy season (roughly June to October), the current through the weir gets too strong for casual wading. Check with one of the riverside restaurants before letting anyone into the water if it’s been raining upstream.
