Laem Chong Thanon

Laem Chong Thanon is a fishing village on the shore of Songkhla Lake (Thale Luang) in Khao Chaison district, Phatthalung province — not on the Andaman coast, despite how the name sounds. Thailand’s largest natural lake laps against the cape here rather than open sea, and the village’s wooden stilt houses and longtail boats face inland water, not surf. Entry is free and there’s no fixed schedule, though early morning is when the working waterfront is most active.

Weathered wooden houses on stilts line the shore, built up against seasonal lake-level changes rather than tides. Fishermen still work traditional longtail boats on the lake, setting and checking nets for the freshwater and brackish species Thale Luang supports — a different catch profile from the marine fishing villages found on Thailand’s coasts. Wooden walkways connect houses along the waterfront, and the surrounding wetland vegetation supports a range of waterbirds, an extension of the habitat that makes nearby Thale Noi one of the country’s best-known bird sanctuaries.

Watch out: This is a working village, not a staged cultural site — there are no facilities, no admission gate, and no guided programme. Visit with the same courtesy you’d extend to any residential area: stick to the public walkways, ask before photographing people directly, and don’t expect English signage or explanations.

The pace follows the lake and the fishing schedule rather than a tourist timetable. Boats go out early and come back with the morning catch; by mid-morning, activity along the shore quiets down. There’s no market stall setup or souvenir trade built around visitors here, which is precisely why it stays low-key even as nearby Thale Noi draws more organised day trips.

A car or motorbike from Phatthalung town is the practical way in; there’s no direct public transport to the cape. Bring sun protection and shoes that handle wooden walkways, and keep visits brief and respectful since this is a residential fishing community first. It pairs well with Khao Chaison Hot Well and Cool Stream in the same district, or with Thale Noi further along the lake for a fuller look at Phatthalung’s Songkhla Lake shoreline.
