Luang Pho To Wat Phatung

Luang Pho To is a 52-metre-tall Buddha statue in the pang prathan phon (blessing) pose at Wat Pha Thang, in Ban Rai district, Uthai Thani — 23 metres across the lap, and the largest Buddha image in the province. Local disciples and villagers built it between 1989 and 1997; it isn’t an ancient or inherited image, and the temple doesn’t pretend otherwise. It stands on a hillside facing east, visible from the approach road well before you reach the temple grounds. Entry is free, open daily through the daytime.

The temple itself has a more practical history than the statue suggests. Wat Pha Thang originally stood near a river crossing by the village, a low-lying spot that flooded repeatedly, and villagers moved it to the current hilltop site around 1928 to get it above the water line. The giant Buddha came decades later, funded and built by the temple’s own disciples and surrounding community rather than royal or government patronage — a village project on a large scale, not a centuries-old pilgrimage site.

Because the statue is recent, the grounds feel cleaner and more contemporary than many rural Isan or upcountry temples — less patina, more freshly maintained concrete and paint. That’s not a criticism so much as a fact worth setting expectations around: come for the scale of the Buddha and the hilltop view over Ban Rai district, not for centuries-old murals or antique relics. Locals still visit to make merit, and it’s a genuine village temple rather than a tour-bus stop, so keep noise and photography respectful of anyone praying.

Insider Tip: The statue is visible from the road on the approach to Ban Rai — if you’re driving through the district anyway, it’s an easy short stop even without dedicating a half-day to it.

Dress modestly — covered shoulders, long trousers or a skirt — and remove your shoes before entering any prayer hall. There’s no public transport running directly to the temple; a car or motorbike from Ban Rai town center is the practical way in.
