Wat Khao Wong Phrommachan

Wat Khao Wong Phrommachan sits in a valley between two hills — Khao Wong and Khao Phrommachan — in Wang Hin subdistrict, Ban Rai district, Uthai Thani. It’s easy to confuse with the district’s much more visited Wat Tham Khao Wong and its four-storey teak pavilion, but that temple sits roughly 30 kilometres away in a different subdistrict. This one is smaller, quieter, and built around a genuine cave system rather than a showcase building.

A handful of named caves reward the trip. Tham Chaeng lets daylight filter all the way through, giving it its name (“bright cave”). Tham Ngu Leuyom is home to reticulated pythons, so watch your footing and keep some distance if you spot one. Tham Nam holds standing water year-round — knee-deep in the dry season, chest-deep once the rains arrive — and Tham Phet and Tham Ploi hold stalactites and stalagmites that catch torchlight like gemstones, which is where their names (“diamond cave” and “gem cave”) come from.

A rock pillar near the temple carries a small mondop on its summit, and the ordination hall is built directly into the mountainside on the slope below. Getting to the diamond and gem caves specifically requires a guide — the passages aren’t signposted or lit, and the temple can arrange one on request.

To find it, follow the same road toward Wat Tham Khao Taphap and continue about 7 kilometres past it, then turn left for a further kilometre. There’s no reliable public transport this far into Ban Rai district, so a car or motorbike is essential.

Insider Tip: Call ahead before making the drive if you specifically want to see Tham Phet or Tham Ploi — without a guide arranged in advance, you’ll only get the surface caves.

Wear proper shoes with grip — the ground inside the water cave and around the rock pillar gets slick — and bring a torch of your own as backup even if the temple provides one.
