Mae Kampong Village
หมู่บ้านแม่กำปอง
Mae Kampong is a mountain village in a forested valley about an hour east of Chiang Mai, in Mae On district. Wooden houses cluster along a stream that tumbles through a tiered waterfall, coffee and miang (fermented tea) grow on the surrounding slopes, and the whole place runs as a community-based tourism project. It’s free to visit — you pay only for a coffee, a homestay or an activity — and it’s one of the north’s most rewarding day trips or overnight escapes.
What to do
The pleasure here is slow: wander the village lanes along the water, climb up beside the Mae Kampong waterfall through its tiers, and stop at a café for coffee grown on the hillside above you. The village made its name on miang, the fermented-tea leaves chewed across the north, and you can see both tea and coffee processed here. For more activity, a forest canopy walkway strings through the trees and a zipline runs across the valley. It’s a Northern Thai (Khon Muang) farming community, not a staged attraction — the appeal is that ordinary village life carries on around you.
Insider Tip: Stay a night. Day-trippers get the cafés and the waterfall, but an overnight homestay gives you the part that lingers — cool evening air, morning mist through the coffee trees, and dinner cooked by your host family.
Getting there
It’s roughly 50 km and about an hour from Chiang Mai on a winding mountain road, so come by car, scooter or a hired songthaew. Cool season (November–February) is the classic time; bring a warm layer, as evenings are genuinely chilly up here. The San Kamphaeng hot springs sit on the way out from the city and pair well.
Watch out: The road up is steep and twisting — fine in a car, but only ride a scooter up if you’re a confident rider, especially in the wet. Weekends bring day-trip crowds to the cafés; a weekday is calmer.
