Mae Mok Reservoir

Mae Mok Reservoir is an earth-fill irrigation dam in Wiang Mok subdistrict, Thoen district — the far southern edge of Lampang province, close to the Sukhothai border. It covers about 10,000 rai of water, roughly 2km across, with a dam crest running 1.9km, built to supply farmland in Thoen and neighbouring Thung Saliam district over the provincial line in Sukhothai. It’s about 50km from the Thoen district junction by car; there’s no public transport this far out.

Fishing is the main draw for Thai visitors — sawai (Pangasius catfish), nuan chan, yi sok, tilapia, carp, and taphian all turn up on lines here, with late March to May reported as the strongest fishing window. Local rafts operate on the water for anyone who wants a scenic float rather than a rod, drifting past reflections of the surrounding hills. A guesthouse run by the irrigation project sits at the reservoir, but you need to arrange it in advance through the project office rather than turning up expecting a room.

Insider Tip: There’s no restaurant at the reservoir itself — stock up in Wiang Mok or Thoen town before you drive out, and bring your own fishing gear if that’s the plan; nothing is rented on site.

The reservoir has no staffed entrance and no fixed opening hours in the way a ticketed attraction does — mornings and late afternoons are simply when the light and temperature are best, not when a gate opens. Weekdays are quiet; the crowd here skews toward local anglers and picnicking families rather than tour groups, part of the appeal if you want an unpolished stretch of northern Thai countryside.

Watch out: Swimming isn’t recommended away from designated areas — the reservoir feeds irrigation infrastructure, and currents near the dam structure aren’t something to test casually.

Pack sunscreen and drinking water regardless of what you’re there for — shade is limited around the open water, and the nearest shops are back in Wiang Mok or Thoen.
