Nam Sai Canal

Nam Sai Canal (Khlong Nam Sai) is a spring-fed waterway on the edge of Khiri Rat Nikhom district, about 45 minutes from Surat Thani city. The water rises from underground springs rather than surface runoff, which is why it stays clear year-round even when nearby rivers turn brown after rain — locals call it “Khlong Lok Ta,” the trick-the-eye canal, because the transparency makes the water look shallower than it actually is. A community group manages the site and charges around 30 THB entry plus 20 THB parking; it’s open daily from roughly 09:00 to 17:00.

The canal itself is narrow, shaded by overhanging trees and trailing vines that keep the water cool even at midday. Canoes and kayaks are available to rent on site for an added fee, and paddling upstream past the shallow, glass-clear stretches is the main draw — the current is gentle enough for beginners, and the water rarely gets above chest depth along the main paddling section. Small fish are visible against the pale sandy bottom from a metre or more away, which is unusual for a Thai waterway this close to farmland. Simple food stalls near the entrance sell noodles and grilled snacks, and there’s a car park at the site.

Weekday mornings are the quietest time to visit — weekends bring domestic day-trippers from Surat Thani and Khiri Rat Nikhom town, and the narrow canal fills up with paddlers faster than the parking area suggests it should. This isn’t a polished attraction with interpretive signage or a visitor centre; it’s a working local swimming and paddling spot that happens to have unusually clear water, and the atmosphere reflects that.

Insider Tip: Go in the dry season (December-April) if clarity is the point of the trip — heavy rain upstream can cloud the water for a day or two even though the springs keep it clearer than a typical canal.

Watch out: There’s no public transport to the canal itself — buses and songthaews run as far as Khiri Rat Nikhom town, but you’ll need your own car or motorbike, or an arranged ride, to cover the last stretch.

Bring a change of clothes, reef-safe sunscreen, and cash for the entry fee and canoe rental — there’s no card payment on site.
