Pak Nam Tapi

Pak Nam Tapi is the point where the Tapi River opens into Ban Don Bay, about 7 km from central Surat Thani along the Surat Thani-Pak Nam road in Bang Kung subdistrict. There’s no entry fee and nothing to buy a ticket for — it’s an open waterfront lined with seafood restaurants and shops, not a fishing market or a park.

The draw here is straightforward: a cluster of restaurants and stalls selling fresh seafood, several with tables built out over the water, plus open views across Ban Don Bay where the river meets the Gulf of Thailand. A working boat pier sits at the waterfront, though it’s not staged for visitors — boats come and go on their own schedule rather than a tourist-facing timetable. This is a stop for eating well and looking at the bay, not a curated cultural experience.

Compared to Surat Thani’s better-known temple and heritage sites, Pak Nam Tapi is unpretentious — a place locals actually eat rather than a constructed attraction. That also means there’s no English signage, fixed opening hours across the whole strip, or guided element; each restaurant and shop runs on its own schedule, generally covering lunch and dinner.

Insider Tip: Pick a restaurant built out over the water rather than one of the shopfront stalls — the same seafood, but with the bay view included in the meal.

Watch out: This isn’t a big tourist market with set hours or English menus everywhere. Go hungry and expect to point at the catch of the day rather than read a translated menu.

Surat Thani town is the base, with Phra That Si Surat and the City Pillar Shrine both a short drive away if you want to pair the waterfront stop with the town’s heritage sites.
