Namtok Khao Ta Krup drops roughly 50 metres through five tiers of limestone inside the Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary, in the Wang Nam Yen district of Sa Kaeo. Locals call it “the young lady of Khao Ang Rue Nai” (สาวน้อยแห่งเขาอ่างฤๅไน), a nickname for the way the water fans out across the rock rather than crashing in one sheet. It runs year-round, but there’s a real difference between a dry-season trickle and a full-flow October cascade.

The walk in from the ranger checkpoint takes 20-30 minutes over packed dirt and root-crossed trail — moderate rather than technical, but sections turn slick after rain, so grippy shoes beat sandals. Each of the five tiers feeds a pool deep enough for a proper swim, boxed in by dipterocarp forest and fern-covered rock. Hornbills and barbets call from the canopy overhead, and butterflies cluster on the damp rock near the lower pools in the mornings.

Khao Ang Rue Nai is a working wildlife sanctuary rather than a manicured park — a 643,750-rai conservation block spanning five provinces (Chachoengsao, Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Sa Kaeo), managed for the gaur, elephants and hornbills that live in its interior rather than for tourist traffic. That’s why Khao Ta Krup stays genuinely quiet compared to the more famous falls at Pang Sida National Park an hour north — most visitors here are day-trippers from nearby Chachoengsao and Sa Kaeo towns rather than tour groups.

Insider Tip: Go early — the sanctuary checkpoint opens at 08:30 and the light through the canopy is best before 10 AM, well before the afternoon crowds (small as they are) arrive from Wang Nam Yen.

Watch out: Because this is a protected wildlife sanctuary and not a municipal park, rangers can close the trail without much notice during heavy rain or active patrols. Call the sanctuary office before making the drive out if you’re coming from any distance.

August through October, at the tail of the rainy season, is when all five tiers run full and the surrounding forest is at its greenest — bring your own water, snacks and insect repellent, since there’s no shop at the trailhead.

Key Facts:
  • Entry: 200 THB (foreign adults) / 100 THB (foreign children); 20 THB (Thai adults) / 10 THB (Thai children)
  • Hours: Daily 08:30-16:30
  • Best time: August-October for peak flow
  • Hike: 20-30 minutes from the ranger checkpoint, moderate, slippery when wet
  • Setting: Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary, not a national park

For more waterfalls and forest in the same province, Pang Sida National Park is about an hour’s drive north, and Khao Chakan Arboretum makes an easier, flatter add-on closer to Sa Kaeo town.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Namtok Khao Ta Krup free to enter?
No. It sits inside the Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary, so admission follows standard protected-area rates — 20 THB for Thai adults (10 THB children) and 200 THB for foreign adults (100 THB children). Older listings calling it free are wrong.
When does the waterfall run fullest?
August through October, at the tail end of the rainy season. By the hot season (March-May) the upper tiers thin out considerably, though the sanctuary's forest cover keeps some flow year-round.
How hard is the walk to the falls?
A moderate 20-30 minute trek from the ranger checkpoint over packed dirt and tree roots. It's manageable in normal trainers but turns slippery after rain, so grippy shoes beat sandals.
Can you swim in the pools?
Yes — each of the five tiers feeds a natural pool deep enough to swim in, which is the main draw once you've made the walk in.
Is this the same as visiting a national park?
No. Khao Ang Rue Nai is a wildlife sanctuary, not a national park, though it's managed by the same Department of National Parks framework and charges similar Thai/foreigner fee tiers.
