Pha Daeng Beach

Wind, sea spray, and sun have carved a run of reddish rock formations into the shoreline at Pha Daeng, about 14 km from Chumphon town on the road out toward Hat Sai Ri. “Pha Daeng” translates to “red cliff,” and the colour is the whole reason to stop here — a band of rust-red rock against grey sand and the Gulf of Thailand, roughly 2 km from Hat Bhrada (Haad Piaw). The cliffs once curved into a natural stone arch resembling a small bridge over the water; that arch has since collapsed, so what you’ll see today is the red-rock formation and viewpoint area rather than the arch itself.

Watch out: This isn’t a swimming beach. The seabed near the rocks isn’t an even, sloped cove — it alternates between shallow shelves and sudden deep pockets, and local guidance is not to swim here. Treat it as a walking and photography stop, not a place to wade in with kids.

Coastal erosion has been chewing into the viewpoint area over the past few years, with sections of the headland losing ground to the sea — worth knowing if you’re planning to get close to the edge for photos. Some visitors snorkel or dive around the rocks in calm weather to look at the coral nearby, but conditions vary and it’s not a supervised or consistently safe spot for it; ask locally before going in.

There’s no resort strip and no beach bar here — just the rocks, the water, and whatever fishing boats happen to be working the coast that day. That’s the appeal for anyone who’s already done Chumphon’s more developed beaches: a quiet stop that most itineraries skip entirely because it doesn’t fit the usual “beach day” template.

Insider Tip: Late afternoon is the best time to visit — the low sun deepens the red in the rock and the site is far quieter than Chumphon’s main beaches, since most travellers head straight past it to Thung Wua Laen.

Reaching Pha Daeng Beach means a short drive from Chumphon town followed by a brief walk down to the rocks. Facilities are limited to nonexistent, so bring water, sunscreen, and snacks. It’s a worthwhile stop if you’re already touring the Chumphon coastline, best treated as a 30-45 minute viewpoint and photo stop rather than a beach day.
