Thung Wua Laen Beach

Thung Wua Laen is a broad, fine-sand beach in Pathio district, about 16 km north of Chumphon town — a gently sloping, shallow-entry stretch that’s one of the calmer swimming beaches on this part of the Gulf coast, and a launch point for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and dive trips out to Chumphon’s offshore islands. Entry is free; the beach is open daily 08:00–19:00.

The name comes from a local legend: a wild bull, wounded by hunters, is said to have recovered and bolted across this field, giving the beach its name — “thung wua laen,” running-bull field — commemorated by a bull statue near the beach entrance. The sand runs long and pale, firm enough underfoot for a walk at low tide, and slopes gradually enough that young kids can wade out a good distance before the water reaches chest height. Rocks pile up at the southern end where the beach meets a low headland, breaking the coastline into smaller coves worth a scramble.

Steady afternoon wind makes Thung Wua Laen one of the Gulf coast’s established windsurfing and kitesurfing spots — a handful of beachfront operators rent gear and give lessons. It also doubles as a departure point for day-trip diving and snorkelling around Mu Ko Chumphon; the beach itself has coral only in patches, so serious diving means booking a boat rather than wading in with a mask.

Insider Tip: Skip the main stretch in front of the resorts and walk south toward the rocks — the water clears up away from the boat-launch area and there’s more shade under the trees at the headland.

Watch out: Water conditions swing hard with the season — generally calm from November to April, rougher during the May–October monsoon, when the beach has flown red no-swimming flags during storm swells (as happened in early 2026). Check the flag before going in past your knees, especially outside the dry season.

Beach vendors and a scatter of restaurants along the road handle food and drink; shade directly on the sand is limited, so bring your own umbrella if you’re staying more than an hour. For more restaurants and a livelier strip right on the sand, Hat Sai Ri nearer Chumphon town is the busier alternative. The beach is reached via the Chumphon–Thung Wua Laen road, turning onto Highway 3180 past the Chumphon Government Service Office.
