Pha Daeng National Park

Chiang Dao’s Pha Daeng National Park covers a compact stretch of limestone cliff and forest north of Chiang Mai, named for the reddish rock face (“pha daeng” means red cliff) that rises above the trail network near Nawai village. Entry costs 100 THB for foreigners and 20 THB for Thai nationals, and the park gate is open daily from 08:00 to 16:30.

Two marked trails cover the park’s terrain. The shorter cliff route climbs to viewpoints directly beneath the red limestone face, a walk of under an hour each way. The longer forest trail pushes deeper into hill evergreen forest, where hornbill calls carry through the canopy and the path underfoot turns root-tangled and steep in places — allow three to four hours round trip if you’re doing the full loop. Neither trail requires a guide, but both are unsigned in Thai-only at a few junctions, so downloading an offline map before you set out saves backtracking.

Watch out: The trails have no shade cover on the cliff sections, and the limestone rock holds heat. Midday between December and February is tolerable; March through May it gets punishing by 11 AM.

Wildlife here is more heard than seen — expect birdsong, the occasional gibbon call from deeper forest, and butterflies along the sunnier stretches, rather than large mammal sightings. The park sees a fraction of the traffic that Doi Suthep or Doi Inthanon pull in, which is the actual draw: empty trails, quiet viewpoints, and none of the queueing that comes with Chiang Mai’s bigger parks.

Insider Tip: Arrive right at the 08:00 opening. Mist still clings to the cliff face for the first hour, and the temperature difference between an 8 AM start and a 10 AM start on the forest trail is significant in the hot season.

Basic camping is available near the park office for anyone wanting to extend the visit, though you’ll need your own tent — none are for rent on site. There’s no restaurant inside the park; pick up food and water in Chiang Dao town before heading in, since the nearest shops are back on the main road. November through February brings the driest trail conditions and the clearest long-distance views from the cliff viewpoints; June through October the paths turn slick and leeches show up after rain.
