Huai Luek Royal Project

Huai Luek Royal Project is a working highland agricultural station in Ping Khong subdistrict, Chiang Dao, open daily 06:00-18:00 with free entry. It’s one of the smaller royal project centres that grew out of King Bhumibol’s programme to replace opium cultivation with legitimate highland crops, established for the Hmong community who settled at Ban Huai Luek from the late 1970s — and unlike some research-only stations, this one has a genuine visitor offering.
The core of a visit is walking the trial plots: temperate vegetables, herbs, and cut flowers, with chrysanthemums as one of the more photogenic crops when they’re in bloom. A small restaurant and a coffee shop sit on site, along with a shop selling produce and souvenirs. About 1.5 km from the centre, a walking trail leads to Tham Ngam, a limestone cave with stalactites, flowstone, and calcite formations — worth the short extra walk if you’re not in a rush. The adjoining Hmong village runs its own community market selling local produce and forest goods, which is as much a part of the visit as the project’s own plots.
Insider Tip: November to March is when the flower and vegetable plots peak, since that’s the temperate growing season at this elevation — visit outside that window and the fields will be noticeably thinner.
Mountain air keeps temperatures well below the valley floor year-round, more so in the cool season, so bring a layer even if Chiang Mai city felt warm on the way up. The drive from Chiang Mai takes roughly 1.5-2 hours by car or motorbike, largely on the Chiang Dao-Fang road before a final stretch of mountain road into Ping Khong subdistrict — take that last section slowly, particularly if you’re arriving toward dusk.
Watch out: this is a small, working agricultural centre, not a landscaped garden attraction — expect functional plots and modest facilities rather than manicured grounds. It rewards visitors interested in how the royal project system actually operates day to day.

- Hours: Daily 06:00-18:00
- On site: Vegetable/flower plots, restaurant, coffee shop, souvenir shop

The project sits within Chiang Dao, the gateway town for this stretch of the mountains. Tham Chiang Dao — the region’s marquee cave system — makes an easy add-on for the same day, and further afield on the same highland royal-project circuit is Mon Ngo Royal Project Development Center, grown around tea rather than temperate vegetables.
